Research Interests

Dr. Reid's work has focused on the areas of knowledge mobilization in schools and districts, knowledge influencers, math content knowledge of elementary pre-service teachers, student and teacher math anxiety in the classroom, and building efficacy for math teaching. He co-developed a numeracy diagnostic test for elementary teacher candidates (TCs) that began in 2014. Four years of test results gave evidence that TCs require stronger competencies in various areas in numeracy. These data became part of a research study Dr. Reid co-authored and it has gained interest from within educational communities seeking to improve TCs’ math content knowledge.

He also co-led another research study in 2018 on TCs’ MCK and its significant correlation to
math anxiety, which was published in a peer reviewed journal. In 2019, Dr. Reid was the lead author of a mixed methods study which involves the examination of 962 numeracy test results of elementary TCs, as well as semi-structured interviews to gather in-depth insights about their math perspectives and habits. This research highlights themes of math avoidance, belief in ‘math people,’ and denial of teaching math. The culmination of these research findings led to the proposal of a MathPlus course, designed to improve elementary MT TCs’ math concepts.  As a collaborator on a team of three scholars, Dr. Reid's work has been supported by Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, as well as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
