Welcome to the Department of Applied Psychology & Human Development

The Department of Applied Psychology & Human Development (APHD) is a research-intensive department with programs focused on basic and applied research relating to children, adolescents and adults. APHD boasts some of the finest, internationally-known scholars in their fields who teach in our five graduate programs; Child Study and Education (Teacher Education program); Counselling and Clinical Psychology; Counselling Psychology; Developmental Psychology and Education; and School and Clinical Child Psychology.

Applications for Fall 2025 are NOW OPEN and will close for most programs on November 4, 2024.

As the Chair of Applied Psychology and Human Development (APHD), I am delighted to welcome you to our community. At APHD, we are dedicated to excellence in research and education and strive to create an environment where students, faculty, and staff can learn, grow, innovate and connect.

Our department offers a variety of graduate programs in education and psychology, including Child Study and Education, Clinical and Counselling Psychology, Counselling Psychology, School and Clinical Child Psychology, and Developmental Psychology and Education. Additionally, we are proud to house the 91±¬ÁÏ Psychology Clinic, a training clinic for students in our clinical, counselling and school psychology programs, and the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute for Child Study, which includes the Laboratory School.

Research and innovation are at the heart of our mission. Our faculty, who are leaders in their fields, address critical issues impacting individuals across the lifespan. At APHD, students play a crucial role in this research, engaging with world-class faculty through thesis work, research practicum, graduate assistantships, coursework, and many other research opportunities. Each year, our community comes together at the annual APHD Research Gala to share new discoveries and honour contributions in research, leadership, and community service.

Degree Programs Offered

With multiple programs to to choose from, students from diverse backgrounds and experience with interest in mental health and well-being can earn a Masters of Arts, Master of Education, Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Education. Students will expand their knowledge of human development and improve practice in key areas such as teaching, counselling psychology, and school and clinical child psychology.

Unique to our department are teaching intensive experiences within the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study Laboratory School and the 91±¬ÁÏ's Psychology Clinic that provide students with rich practical experiences to advance understanding and innovation.
